![]() ![]() The cost per airframe per year will be similar, but the ability to improvise and adapt to changes in technology will be so much greater. Instead of spending the bulk of the money maintaining older airframes, the Air Force can pay a little more upfront and get newer aircraft every 8 years, phasing our aircraft at the 16 year mark. This new digital development program is being opened up to allow more and new manufacturers to produce different models of aircraft. They’ve developed long life programs to keep this airframes in service for 30-50 years (or more cough B-52). The Air Force and much of the military is still running air frames or equipment developed in the 1970s or 1980s. It’s how this new plane was designed and built so rapidly that matters.
